Address increment

6 New Member
Hi,
When I take an address and increment it, it jumps to address+4 bytes..
for example
int * buffer = 0x100;
buffer++; // &buffer = 0x104

why?

Because, in most cases, an int is a 32-bit (4-byte) word.

and in C/C++ pointer arithmatic automatically operates in units of the size of the object pointed to

i.e.

if for any type T

T *px = <SomeValidValue>;
int vpx = (int)px;

then

px+1 == vpx + sizeof(*px);

So it works the same way for structures as well, if you have some structure that is 20 bytes in size have you have a pointer to it ps then the value of ps+1 will actually be 20 bytes further on in memory.
