Reading from a stream for a specific time

1 New Member
Hi all,

I'm a long time reader, first time poster.

How do i go about the problem of not getting held up at a scanf or getchar() statement if there is no data in the input stream. What i am wanting to happening is for the program to ask the user for input and only give them a certain amout of time to reply. Is this possible? If so, could someone direct me to some useful information?

Andrew

This can be done using either delay( ); function if u r using Turbo C, or using Sleep( ); function if u r using VC++.
Example:

printf("Enter the string : ");
for(int i=0; i<100; i++)
{
if(Kbhit)
break;
Sleep(100);
}

if(i<100)
scanf("%s",arr);

The Sleep( ); func accepts 1000th part of a second, so the above code will wait for 10 seconds, if the user doesn't enter anything then the code will exit.
