File management

Hello,

I am trying to find a function, to basically, return the names of
files/folders in a given folder (under windows).

Thanks

Please ask about it in a Windows newsgroup.

Check out the Boost library.

(under windows).

Depends. There are possibilities that perhaps the Boost file handling
is not able to deal with. On the other hand, almost all applications
are severely restricted compared to what they could have supported.

You can go to the USA film company, that you need much time and money.

You can do that in a system-specific group.

Don't forget that the benefit of restricted topicality from the OP's
point of view (apart from the fact that without restricted topicality,
subject-specific newsgroups wouldn't exist) is that answsers to their
question are peer-reviewed by people who know the subject.

Imagine that you had misinterpreted the OP's question, or that that
part of the Windows API had been deprecated in favour of something
else, or that you'd simply got it wrong (maybe even just a typo). When
those sort of honest mistakes are made in response to topical questions
in this group, they are rarely left uncorrected and the questioner goes
away with the information they need, confident that it's correct.

In this case, if I recall the Windows API correctly (and I'm not a
Windows API expert), your answer was what the OP needed. However,
that's not the point. The point is that when you do make a mistake
giving out off-topic advice, it's far less likely to be picked up. And
that does not help the OP.

Actually *this argument* only shows that the OP should ask in the group
where the question is most topical. However, I fail to see how it provides
a good reason not to answer off-topic questions:

(1) The assumption that the OP is worse off when given an answer here
is unfounded, at best: the OP is perfectly free to take an answer
given here to a better forum and have it reviewed.

(2) The assumption that we are obliged to help people who ask off-topic
questions is questionable, too. If the OP gets bad advice here, it
is, by and large, the OPs fault.

I can see many possible reasons not to answer off-topic questions. But those
reasons would focus on the consequence of answering off-topic questions for
this forum and not on the benefit for the OP.

I tend to agree with this point of view, however, if the shoe fits...
Whatever one's reason is to avoid posting OT _answers_, it's a good
reason.
