Broadcast presence on the network

13
Hey,
Does anyone have any idea how to, for lack of a better way to describe it, broadcast a server application on the network. An example of this is with the iphone remote for itunes. When you open it, it will search the network and list all the instances of itunes that are currently open on the network. I understand that this will be the job of the server and the client, and the way im thinking of doing it is pinging the whole subnet for a specific port and seeing if it responds, but im not sure if this is the best way. Can anyone offer a better solution?

Thanks,

ethangk
