Simple Events Question

In my simple VS ADO local application, why do some events and methods (same
Class instantiation) hold different values for some variables.

Examples:
1. The dG.CurrentRowIndex may equal a completely different value in a
combobox_event() or, someIOther() method, then let's say in the grid
CurrentCellChanged_event(), even when one is called after the other.
2. Another is trying to get the proper Dataset DataRowState during a
FormActivation_event() after another form closes which changes the same
dataset

I fix 1 and 2 with calls to a method rather then letting an event handle it.
What don't I understand about events? Are events like a different thread?
