How can I determine DOCTYPE at runtime?

I write server controls for other developers. I am porting them to 2.0
and I expect some will be used in apps upgraded from 1.1 and using an
HTML DOCTYPE. In new 2.0 apps I expect the DOCTYPE to be XHTML.

In a few circumstances I'd like to emit different markup based on the
DOCTYPE, but I can't figure out how to determine the DOCTYPE of the
page the control is in at runtime.
