Help: IIS no longer running after SP2 and VS.NET 2005

Hi,
I had IIS running perfectly on my WinXP Pro laptop. It also had VS.NET
2002. Some time before my trip I removed VS.NET 2002, installed SP2 for
WinXP, installed the Microsoft Web Studio 2005 Beta/trial. Then I installed
VS.NET 2003 as well.

The problem is, now I am unable to do any webdevelopment on the machine! I
have a couple of web projects installed with their web sharing folders
properly set.

Now when I load the project on Visual Studio it is unable to connect with
the server.

Pointing my browser to http://localhost/MyWebFolder fails with "Page not
found or DNS error".

Checking the Task Manager I don't see any IIS process running.

I tried restarting IIS (as admin user) and it gives no error yet there is no
IIS running after the "restart".
I do however see the following on the Event Viewer:

Application image dump failed.
Server Application ID: {3D14228C-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}
Server Application Instance ID: {2898FEEE-02A7-45A5-B667-E00BDF89C32C}
Server Application Name: IIS In-Process Applications
Error Code = 0x80004005 : Unspecified error
COM+ Services Internals Information:

Comsvcs.dll file version: ENU 2001.12.4414.258 shp
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
Since I am on a trip I did no bring my installation CDs so I hope somebody
has some answers and hints to save the purpose of this trip.
Regards,
Emilio

Mine is an IBM Think Pad laptop. It has every in it except VS.Net2005 and it
is doing well. In addition, I never had to uninstall VS.Net.2003.

So, I would uninstall IIS5 and reinstall it. Then make sure that it is
working. Then reapply Windows Xp Service Pack 2. Restart and see if the
problem goes away.

I think this is a huge Microsoft screw up. The software I currently have is
as follows:
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- MS Web Developer Studio 2005 Beta + .NET Framework 2.0 Beta
- MS Visual Studio 2003 + .NET Framework 1.1

Unfortunately I am now on the road for 5 weeks and I did not bring neither
my XP CD nor my VS to reinstall any of those... I guess this trip has just
turned worthless given that I won't be able to do any further development
until I get back (thus missing some great opportunities).

I agree with you. I am in nearlly the same situation. But I do have my
DevStudio DVDs.

I get the error "A connection with the server could not be established'

I have already tried moving back to VS2003, uninstalled IIS and reinstalled
based upon the instructions in detail. I still get the message.

Have tried to call and use one of my free calls, but the response time is
upto 72 hours.

Mono, here I come

I would never use beta product on my Production machine. You likely invite
yourself into troubles.

This is just a hunch ... but since XP SP2 installs and starts up the XP
firewall by default, try stopping the built in firewall and see if that
helps. If it does, you can either keep the XP firewall off (which if
you're travelling I wouldn't really suggest), or add inetinfo.exe to
the list of applications that can access the internet.

I wouldn't use a beta product on my alpha server either. Let the guniea pigs sort out the issues of course unless you like being a guniea pig. But I believe that is the definition of Beta tester isn't it?
