Automatic case numbering in Access

1 New Member
Hello,

I'm trying to convert a currently Excel-based complaint system into Access 2007 as the system has grown to the size and complexity that Excel no longer adequately suits our needs. However, given the way that we number our cases I have been unable to properly assign unique identifiers for the primary key. Can anyone help with this? I'm assuming it will requier scripting, with which I have absolutely NO experience. :)

Case number is formatted as "YY-XXXX" where "YY" is the last two digits of the year the initial complaint on the case was received (important if we receive a complaint on 12/31 when we're closed and don't get it until after the new year), and "XXXX" is a unique serial number starting with 0001 and progressing upwards by 1, with that portion "resetting" for the next year.

The initial complaint date has its own field called (heh) "initial complaint date" just for this purpose. The serialized portion of the case number needs to be based off the year portion so that, for example, if we enter the first complaint of 2012 before we enter the last complaint of 2011, they will still both be properly assigned their case numbers.

Any help is greatly appreciated; please ask me if you need more information. Thanks very much!!

Megan,

The basic concepts are discussed in Customer Autonumber increments?. Check through that and then let us know if you need any more help or explanation.
