Linked dBase Tables & Index Corruption

I have an Access XP database which links to dBase III format tables and
updates them. The app used to work fine until recently when the dBase
index tables keep getting corrupted and need to be re-built. Prior to a
couple of months ago, Access would successfully maintain the indexes.

I've checked the MS knowledgebase
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263561
and verified the mdac versions and dbase isam drivers. Near as I can
understand the articles, everything is current and should allow updates
to the dBase tables - but they don't.

Another possibly related issue is that my version of Access no longer
creates a .inf file when linking to a new database. It appears to work
with the current dBase tables since there is already an inf file there
which identifies the index files.

Any ideas for what's causing the problem and where to find a solution?
