Can't open mdb that's been emailed

This is the second day with the second database from a second person on a
second computer that I have had this problem.

When somebody emails a database to me and I try to open it, I first get a
message stating that the application has come from an untrusted publisher,
and even when I click OK, I get a second message that the database can't be
opened because it's on a site outside my intranet that can't be trusted --
even though the mdb is on my desktop!

If I move the database to another computer on the network, I still get the
first message but am then able to open the database.

I don't have this problem when the mdb is zipped before it is sent to me.
(If only I controlled the world, people would always zip their mdb's before
sending them to me.)

Thanks for any insite on how to fix or work around this problem.

It's my guess (and it IS a guess) that your email server is scanning incoming mail for the "bad" file extensions, like .exe, .vbs, .mdb, etc. and is doing something to the attachments before serving the emails to you. If the attachment has a .zip extension (doesn't need to be "zipped", just have the extension), the attachment is left alone.

You're right about the zip files being left along. The problem is that those
who aren't savey enough to send me a real zip probably won't be able to
change the extension either. Especially since they probably can't see file
extensions on their machine.

The problem is really weird. I've confirmed that mdb files rec'd through
Outlook Express will open (with warnings) from a network drive but not from
a local drive.

Another thing (a little OT) that is a real trip is receiving excel
spreadsheets that are mailed to you from within Excel seem to be inseperable
from their headers. Last month somebody emailed 12 workbooks to me and I had
to copy/paste each one of them into a new workbook in order to get rid of
the headers!

Actually doing work is challenging enough. Why all the hassle with email?
She sent a file, I want the file, I should be able to click the f-ing "could
be a virus" disclaimer and download the damn file!

No, it wasn't just luck, good or bad. Its was just a very small part of a
much bigger plan.

This may be way off the mark but I have found that I can't open any of the
DB examples I've downloaded as Zip files from the net. Once I have saved
them on my local drive, I've had to right click on the file and unlock it.
That may be worth a try.

Yes that is the beahvior of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Any file
identified as coming from "another system" whether it be dragged across the LAN
or from Email is initially "Blocked" and you have to go into properties and
"Unblock" it before it can be used.

This doesn't affect ALL files, but only those deemed dangerous and I suspect
that if the file came from a Trusted Site the blocking might not be imposed.
