Share a database

How can several users share a single Access database at the same time
with read-only permissions?

If the folder is read only, then the ldb cannot be created and access wants
to lock it exclusively.
Therefor, you(having full permission should open the mydb.MDB, copy and
rename the ldb file to copy of mydb.ldb
Exit the mdb. rename the ldb to mydb.ldb

Therefor, users can now open the mdb and use it in read only mode but not
lock the mdb exclusively.

does that work for you ?

You can set up your forms, under the data tab, with
AllowEdits,Additions, and Deletes to False/No.

Or you can open your forms with the Docmd.OpenForm and set the argument
to read-only. Ex:
DoCmd.OpenForm "x", , , , acFormReadOnly

There's an introductory presentation on Access in a Multiuser Environment
that I did for my user group that you can download from
http://appdevissues.tripod.com. It will identify topics that I thought
worthwhile to discuss, and a bit more. The best collection of detailed
information and links on the subject of Access in the multiuser environment
is at MVP Tony Toews' site, http://www.granite.ab.ca/accsmstr.htm.

Thanks for all your ideas. I'll try them out at work next week. My
predecessor as IT manager forgot the Access password. Unable to edit
the forms and reports we had to copy the database which solved the
editing problem and created the sharing problem.

Many thanks again
