I want to set up Access to use a barcode scan for admission to the
lunchroom at the school I work at. We already have the scanners and
computers. I just need to set up a program to recognize the student
barcodes on their ID cards to know which students can be admitted and
not admitted into three different lunches.
Any help would be appreciated.
As this will be real-time, a keyboard wedge would be the easiest option,
hand held terminals are fine for batch mode but real time processing
would require a radio link (or perhaps bluetooth is available nowadays).
Essentially a keyboard wedge is just that, metophorically wedged between
keyboard and PC, any scan will appear as keystrokes to the application.
You will need the actual barcode value (number that the barcode
represents) in your student record and a form with a textbox that when
filled in (AfterUpdate event) will verify the student and keep the Spam
Fritter brigade out of the Lobster restaurant. I won't go into any more
detail than that as I don't know your level of skill in Access I might
end up teaching you to suck eggs (provided you have the right barcode <g>)
Of course this doesn't stop students swapping badges but if you have a
student photo in your database... :-)
