Can't grow calculated field in report

I have a field in a report which is filled by a function. This is
because I want the values displayed in a particular way.

The field is filled with:
strVal = Format(ValLow, "$#,###") & " / " & Format(ValHi, "$#,###")

The difficulty lies when the concatenated string is too long to fit on
one line and needs to therefore fit on two lines. The detail section
is CanGrow and CanShrink, every field in the secton is CanGrow and
CanShrink. There is a long text field (Title) in the section which
shrinks and grow as necessary but that field displays directly the
value from the field in the table while this report field displays the
result of the above function.

When I have something too long I end up with $XXX,XXX,XXX / in my
field rather than

$XXX,XXX,XXX /
$XXX,XXX,XXX

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how
to get this thing to work.. and it just isn't.

Any ideas? Anyone???

What is strVal?
If it is a text box, then you are assigning a value to in an event?
Which event? For example, if you assign the value in Detail_Print, Access
has already finished formatting the size, so you could try using
Detail_Format instead.

Alternatively, could you just set the Control Source of the text box to:
=Format(ValLow, "$#,###") & " / " & Format(ValHi, "$#,###")

Are there other controls in your detail section which are on the same
horizontal level as the one you want to grow?
In general, textboxes on reports will only grow or shrink if there is not
another control sharing the same horizontal space.
