when to requery

I have 2 sub forms on a form.
A query picks up a record id from the 1st sub form to provide data for a combo
on the 2nd sub form.
Both sub forms are in datasheet view.
I am having trouble working out when to requery. If the requery is on the first
control in the 2nd subform the focus moves back to the first row,
Any thoughts
