Quotes, Tilde, Caret Symbol appears only when clicked twice ! | | |
Hi Guys ... Sorry I'm a little off topic but didn't know on which NG to
post.
Just purchased a new HP laptop & was working on some Access project
when I realized that certain keys when typed were not appearing ... eg:
Single Quotes
Double Quotes
Caret (exponentiation) Symbol i.e. (Shift+6)
Tilde symbol & the sign below it (on the same key)
The strange thing is that when I type out any of these symbols twice
they appear twice on screen but when I type it once it doesn't appear.
Another odd thing: If I type a double quote it doesn't appear but
immediately thereafter if I type any other character, both, the Quote +
the character appears.
Please note, I subsequently fired up Notepad & MS-Word and the same
behaviour replicates itself there too.
Has anyone faced this before ? I'm sorry, I know I'm a little
off-topic here but since I've been posting to this group before & didnt
know where else to post, I'm taking a chance. If anyone would like to
direct me to another site, I'd be obliged.
Thanks & Best Rgds,
Prakash. | | | | re: Quotes, Tilde, Caret Symbol appears only when clicked twice ! prakashwadhwani@gmail.com wrote: Quote:

I would talk to HP or the dealer. Some big companies set up their
machines in weird ways - years ago when I got my first Dell, the win98
DOS prompt would not allow me to use the English character set - calling
them, they explained this was how they "met" Canada's bilingual
requirements, ie, by setting the DOS window to accept the french
character set.
It was very easy to fix and doubtless your affliction will be too! 8)

Yes, it sounds like you have a keyboard/language localisation
problem: the key values are not shown until windows works out
if they are part of a sequential key entry pair for non-keyboard
characters. Quotes and Carets are a common way of typing
characters like e' and [carat e]

Hi,
Change the "Textservices and Languages" on your computer to English,
and striking a quote prints a quote.

Thx ! This helped !
Under Text Services and Input Languages -Settings I changed the
default input language from:
English (United States) - United States-International
to:
English (United States) - US
Now it seems to work as I feel it should. Wonder though what's the
difference between the two ??
Thx again to everyone who's posted a reply.
Best Rgds,
Prakash.

Hi Prakash,
The difference between the two is that in the latter case (US) it's
very hard to type words with accents etc, e.g. bébé (french of baby)
In the first case (United States-International) you just type b'eb'e
and you get your bébé.
