Problems with .mdw file and permissions - help!

Hi - I need help with an Access security problem. I've already Googled
this one but found no help and I'm starting to think there might not be
any to provide. Perhaps one of you kindly people can offer some
advice?

Some years ago I was given responsiblity for an Access database. The
previous person who created and maintained the database was a
well-meaning but not overly Access-savvy soul who decided one day that
it might be a good idea to enforce security on it. Then he left,
leaving it to me.

The database worked for some time, then all of a sudden it didn't. I'm
getting the following message when I attempt to open the .mdb file:

"You do not have the necessary permissions to use the <filname.mdb>
object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this
object establish the appropriate permissions for you."

I understand through some research that this is related to the
"Secured.mdw" file that's in the same folder as the .mdb file.

It seems that somehow the .mdw file has been changed, or is a different
one to what it should be, I don't know exactly. Getting the original
..mdw file isn't an option.

Does anyone have any ideas at all as to how I could go about accessing
the contents of the .mdb file?

One approach would be to use the Workgroup Administrator under the Tools
menu, Security. You can attach to a generic .mdw file or create a new .mdw
file. Then try to open the database after attaching to the new .mdw file.

you can have many system.mdw files to setup security for different
access application

so it could be that the default mdw (set up the Workgroup
Administrator) is the wrong one for your application

you can
a) use Workgroup Administrator to change the default to the correct
mdw
b) use a command line option to specify the mdw file to use
