ASP.NET - New Web Application

I am trying yo create a new web application on a site
other than the default site. I have a DNS pointer setup
pointing the site name to the IP of the server it is on.
I have installed VS.Net 2003 on the server so it is
local. The development part of this site is set to be on
port 81 so I am trying to create the new application in
the root of the site at http://sitename:81. From the
local machine I get a 401 error. From a remote machine I
get a 500 - internal server error. I have permission to
the directory and I put a sample default page up to test
it and it works fine to view the defalt page.

What am I missing?
