Saving Thumbnails

I`m trying to learn some VB.Net by writing an image
browser.

What I want to be able to do is to save all thumbnails in
a directory to a single file and access the thumbnails
through this file when returning to the directory.

It would also be nice to have the file updated when more
images are added to the directory.

In short, I want a setup ala the PaintShopPro browser.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
