I have two tables, both containing an 'authors' column. Is there a way to get a unique list of authors from the two tables? I tried SELECT DISTINCT `authors` from `table1`, `table2`; but I got an "Column 'authors' in field list is ambiguous" error. Is there also a query to return only the count of distinct authors from the two tables? ...

I've just applied an index to my mysql 4.0.21 database/tables and it really helped with speed. I was wondering if this index I added is automatically adjusted by mysql over time or do I have to go back say every week and remake the index? Mysql 4.0.21 Linux 2.4.30 Thanks.

Any reason to suspect that ROLLBACK is not working for MySQL v4.1.10a? Have reduced code to a very simple test, START TRANSACTION followed by INSERT followed by ROLLBACK, but the INSERT remains. Tried substituting SET AUTOCOMMIT=0 for START TRANSACTION, no effect, no error. Thanks.
