How is the Virgin Mobile LG rated?

Was wanting to know if google voice or something like it could be used with a prepaid phone that was active but had no minutes on it.

If I hit my phone lightly, the whole screen turns black. A lot of times it turns black for no reason at all, even during a phone call. When this happens no buttons or anything I do gets any reaction from the phone-it looks off, until i restart it.

I'm up for a contract renewal with my carrier (AT&T) pretty soon and am finally taking the plunge into a Smartphone.
