Re: Class v. Instance variables in Python

On Nov 10, 2008, at 2:44 PM, Zane Selvans wrote:
However, one (and only one) of these instance variables is behaving
mysteriously like a class variable: all instances of the class are
sharing a single copy of the variable, located at the same place in
memory.

Is there a common mistake that can result in this behavior, that
doesn't involve using class variables - I really have absolutely
nothing defined in the class except for methods. The problem shows
up regardless of how I name the instance variables (i.e. using name
mangling __names or not). The problematic variable consists of a
list of objects of type Lineament (the same object class as the one
that's giving me problems).
How are you creating your list? You need to make sure that each
instance creates its very own list object, something like:

self.foo = []

rather than grabbing a reference to some shared list instance, such as
one defined as a default argument to your __init__ method.

I am just starting to learn the OO side of Python scripting, and I am a little confused on the following. Take the following example class: >>> class rectangle(object): z = 1 def __init__(self): self.x = 2 >>> r = rectangle() >>> print r.z

I see the value of a class when two or more instances will be created, but Python programmers regularly use a class when there will only be one instance. What is the benefit of this? It has a disadvantage of a whole lot of "self." being required everywhere, making the code less readable. Also, since a strength of Python is rapid...

Hello, I would like to know whether it is possible to define static class methods and data members in Python (similar to the way it can be done in C++ or Java). These do not seem to be mentioned in "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz and David Ascher. It seems like they are a relatively new feature... It seems to me that any truly OO programming...

I am a bit confused. I was under the impression that: class foo(object): x = 0 y = 1 means that x and y are variables shared by all instances of a class. But when I run this against two instances of foo, and set the values of x and y, they are indeed unique to the *instance* rather than the class.

What's the difference between initializing class variables within the class definition directly versus initializing them within the class's __init__ method? Is there a reason, perhaps in certain situations, to choose one over the other? Thank you.

Hi. I've got a question on the differences and how to define static and class variables. AFAIK, class methods are the ones which receives the class itself as an argument, while static methods are the one which runs statically with the defining class. Hence, my understanding is that static variables must be bound to the class defining the...

For example, Typing obj.name, obj.Name, or even object.naMe is all fine (as far as the app is concerned). Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. For...
