new install - help please

I hope this is in the correct newsgroup.

I have purchased and installed Visual Studio .Net 2003 under XP
Professional. However, when I try to look at a VB.net sample web app, it
will not open. I seem to be missing IIS or ASP.Net, but most likely both.
Some research (has left me confused) but I think these are both available
with Windows Server 2003 standard edition, a CD of which came with Visual
Studio.

First, do I really need to install this(Server 2003) to get IIS and ASP.net?

Second, when I looked into installing Sever 2003 on my PC, I got messages
to the effect that it was a bad idea to install in the same partition as XP
pro. Is it correct that I would have to partition my C drive, and how could
I do this without loosing data? I have recently defraged my PC and have
20-30 G contigous available for this partition, but it is already
'allocated'. If the answer is yes to my first question, how to get some of
that free space turned into another partition?

Thanks in advance.

IIS comes with Windows XP Pro, so there is no need to install Windows Server
2003 to get it. ASP.NET is part of the .NET Framework, so there is no need
to worry about that part.
As you've already installed Visual Studio prior to installing IIS (done from
Control Panel->Add Remove Programs and Windows Components), there will be a
mapping issue between Visual Studio and IIS. To establish proper mapping do
one of the following *after* installing IIS:

1. uninstall, then reinstall the .NET Framework (no need to reinstall all of
Visual Studio), or
2. Follow the instructions published in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
#306005 which says in part:
<quote>
After you install the Microsoft .NET Framework Software
Development Kit (SDK) or Visual Studio .NET, Microsoft
Internet Information Service (IIS) mappings are created to
associate the new file extensions and settings for
ASP.NET. If
you did not have IIS installed when you ran the SDK or
Visual
Studio Setup, or if you uninstalled and reinstalled IIS
after
you ran the SDK or Visual Studio Setup, those settings
will
not be in place. You experience unexpected behavior when
you
try to view ASP.NET pages.

When you try to create a new ASP.NET Web application in
Visual
Studio .NET 2003, you receive the following error message:

Visual Studio .NET has detected that the specified Web
server
is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You will be unable to
run
ASP.NET Web applications or services.
MORE INFORMATION
To fix IIS mappings for ASP.NET, follow these steps:
Run the Aspnet_regiis.e xe utility:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open text box, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type the following, and then
press
ENTER:
"%windir%\Micro soft.NET\Framew ork\version\asp net_regiis.exe"
-i
In this path, version represents the version number of
the
.NET Framework that you installed on your server. You
must
replace this placeholder with the actual version
number
when you type the command.
Register the Aspnet_isapi.dl l:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open text box, type the following, and then
press
ENTER:
regsvr32
%windir%\Micros oft.NET\Framewo rk\version\aspn et_isapi.dll
Regsvr32 returns the results of the registration.

For more information about the Aspnet_regiis.e xe utility,
run
this .exe file with -? as an argument.

For a description of the symptoms that are typically
related
to ASP.NET and IIS application mappings that are not
configured properly, click the following article number to

Because
the Server-Side Code Is Not Processed

Peter, Hi!

You do not need to install Windows Server 2003 to get IIS. You have access
to this provided you your WinXp install CD. In Add/Remove programs, under
Add/Remove Windows Components, you can install IIS.
Additionally, ASP.Net is part of the .Net Framework which should have been
installed when you installed VS2003.
Issues around WinXp Sp2 and IIS should also be taken into account.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
