XML data manipulation in an InfoPath 2003 Solution

Hello;

I have designed an "add new record"-type form in InfoPath 2003 which retrieves its unique form name from a query. The query reads the main data source for the last form number saved to the database. I want my form to read the LastFormNumber field and increment it by one to get the NextFormNumber. However, when I edit the text box properties to add a formula to increment, it doesn't display the new form number. I'm now considering editing the EventHandler routines to manipulate the eventObj.site.node elements. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to do that? What eventHandler(s) should I add the logic, too? It appears that the OnClick event doesn't have access to parts of the DOM so I'm not sure how to accomplish this requirement.

Thanks!

We have a form that's not linked to a database or XML. It's just a basic form in InfoPath 2003 with all service packs. We are documenting our Human Resources procedures and want the ability to auto number the form. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
