XSLT and namespaces on attributes - msxml or my bug?

I'm having real trouble getting an xlink attibute out from a source document (MSXSL and MSXML) - I've read and reread everything I can find on namespaces but it just don't work

here's some sample code:

<root>
<xmlnode xlink:href="#someAnchor"/>
</root>

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink/" exclude-result-prefixes="xlink">
<xsl:template

<xsl:template match="xmlnode">
<xsl:variable name="href" select="@xlink:href"/>
<xls:value-of select="$href"/>
</xsl:template>

I've tried numerous variations on the above but I can't seem to get it to give me the attribute node

I know this is a common problem though I can't find any examples specific to this variation

thanks from a newbie!
