Infinite Loop in svchost.exe?

Hello All,

I have an interesting problem under Windows 7 Home Premium version - while my system is sitting idle:
  1. I see that I have slightly over 25% CPU consumption.
  2. System is AMD CPU with 4 cores.
  3. As a user account, I see roughly fifteen processes, with a total CPU consumption of two to three percent (2%-3%).
  4. Invoking "Show processes from all users", I see that the process scvhost.exe is consuming 25% of the available CPU time.
  5. Image path is "C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe".
  6. Command line is "C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netscvs".
  7. Memory (Private working set) started at ~1.8Gbyte, and is now ~1.0Gbyte.

To me this looks like svchost is infinite looping on one core (of four), or is sitting on a select() call.

Has something poked a virus through into services?
  • Yes, I use AVG virus detection, and three full runs have not shown any problems.

What other sorts of problems may I have encountered?

Your help and insight are much appreciated.

Thank You,
Oralloy
