Microsoft Word Starter document changed to word pad. Why? Very confusing

After typing in the Microsoft Word Starter and got it saved, it changed into Word Pad which is not at all good. Why? Can this be prevented?

You can set up "File Associations" in Windows.
This means that you can tell Windows which application is used to open files of a specific type.
