Word 2010 documents converting to Wordpad after being saved then opened again

I have just had Word 2010 installed on my laptop. I have created some new files and saved them (as Word documents). However, when I reopen the files they only open as Wordpad files. What am I doing wrong / what is happening?

They're not converting to Wordpad so much that the extension is being associated to Wordpad. Right click the file, choose open with, and choose a new default program.
