OK, the first question would be: Have you made sure your drivers are up to date, especially the driver for your graphics card? You shouldn't rely on Microsoft Update for that either, check the site of the graphic cards maker. To check what card you have, go to the device manager (how to get there depends on your version of Windows) and check what device it gives you as your "graphics adapter". Alternatively, you can run dxdiag from the Run option on the start menu and check the tab "Graphics". After you've updated, restart your computer.
If that doesn't work, update your Java version too and try again.
