Cant locate data files

I had to restore my XP system to a previous date and now I cannot locate my data files on my externel drive in Excel and Word. The folders I ceated still exist but the data files are not in the foldrs. When I right click the folder and look in properties it does indicate there are files in that folder. Are the data files lost forever or can they be retrieved? Id it a directory path issue?
