Exported Database link does not work

Hi there,

I have exported a link to my desktop of one of our databases that is stored in a server. This link does not seem to be working. To open that database, I have to open the Access database program first, locate the file then open it from there. Is there a way I can fix this? I have other database links on my desktop and they all work, except this one. I appreciate your help. Thanks

Hi Maxine,

[b]Welcome to Bytes![b]

When you say you exported a link, do you mean that you created a shortcut to the database? Just want to make sure we're on the same page. To help with your question, I'm going to assume that you're talking about a shortcut.

It sounds like your shortcut probably isn't pointed at the database. Do you get any kind of error message when you click on the shortcut?

I would recommend re-creating the shortcut and be sure that you are choosing the .mdb (Access 2003 and earlier) or .accdb (Access 2007 and greater) file, assuming that you are using Access (since you didn't specify a version).

Hope this helps and good luck,

Thanks Beacon for the quick reply. Yes it is a shortcut. I tried that and it still doesn't work. What I did was go to the main folder where the database is located and did a "Send to Desktop (create shortcut)" of the mdb file. I'm wondering why it does this to this one database but not on the others. I have 5 other shortcuts. Thanks.

Hi Maxine.

This seems to be a Windows-based question (although it deals with an Access database). I'll move it across for you.

To help you, it would help us to have the details of exactly how your shortcuts are set up. What's the exact text in your Targets for both one of the working shortcuts as well as the one that doesn't.

Thanks NeoPa. What is weird is sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Like right now, the link works and then I bet later it doesn't. The text for all of my shortcuts are the same as the original database file. I hope this helps. Thanks again.

Not remotely I'm afraid Maxine. I don't have any data to work with still. The same as something I've never seen tells me only that you have some unspecified problem.

I guess you're right NeoPa. It must be a windows-based issue. What info do you need? Sorry I'm not too techy though, so please on layman's terms. Thanks for your help.

What's the exact text in your Targets for both one of the working shortcuts as well as the one that doesn't.

To get this information select the relevant shortcut (A single-click to avoid activating it). View the properties (Alt-Enter or use the Right-click menu). Navigate to the Target within the properties and Copy/Paste it into your post.
