Why does my computer keep trying to open Office 2003 documents in Office 2007?

I recently bought a new netbook and loaded my Office 2003 disc on to it. After a few months it suddenly started opening MS Office Documents in Office 2007 rather than Office 2003. This was OK for the first 40 uses but now it wants me to enter a Key Code and the only one I have (for Office 2003) doesn't work. I don't want Office 2007 and I didn't knowingly download it but there doesn't seem to be any way of getting rid of it. How can I get back to my good old tried and trusted Office 2003?

Hi ToffeeBoy!

I'm not absolutely sure, how Office reacts when installing a newer version than the one that's already there - I believe, it just installs parallel to the older version. In other words, I believe that both versions, 2003 and 2007, may be installed, but 2007 just took priority on opening Documents. Check your "Installed Software" list under System Tools to find out, if I'm right - if both are listed, then both will be installed. There are several ways to get 2003 to be the one it uses, but as the test period for 2007 is up anyway, deinstalling 2007 will probably be the best choice. Then, when you try to open a Document the next time, it should either ask you what to open it with (you choose Word 2003 then of course) or it should automatically open it with something else - hopefully Word 2003. If that doesn't work or if the list doesn't have both versions, please tell us so and we'll try to help some more.

Hi Nepomuk

Thanks for this - uninstalling Office 2007 seems to have done the trick. I still don't quite understand how it got there in the first place though ...
