Why won't my .doc s open in word?

1
I recently changed from ye old word 97 to 2003 but now all my .doc documents can only be opened as word docs by opening them through word, double clicking will open them in wordpad.
I have tried 'open with' but Word isn't on the reccommended programs list and if i go through and find it (as a .exe file) 'word' still won't add onto the list of default programs...therefore i can't say 'always open with this kind of file'
