System won't allow me to download binary files

tried to download parental safety software but i cannot download binary files. This is the screen that I get.

ParentalControlSetup.exe
which is a binary file
from: http://dnl.crawlerparentalcontrol.com
would you like to save this file?

When I click save, in my downloads it says canceled. If I double click it
it says< "Not a valid win32 application". I don't understand this.

What operating system and browser are you using? Are you trying to do this at work?

No, I am at home. I have firefox version 3.5.8. I also have IE 8 and I have the same problem there. Also, windows XP.

I think this might explain your problems.

crawler parental control is also a binary file. I already tried to download it once before.

Did you read the link I posted? It says
Crawler Parental Control is no longer available and is no longer supported.
The reason you can't download it is that it is not available.

I cannot download any binary files. I have been told by many that my computer must have a virus that Norton cannot find. Although I do not get pop ups or any strange behavior. About to give up and pay to have it fixed.

soooo what your saying is you are unable from any web browser on any web page to download any file? I would be looking at firewalls or anything of the sort. How long has this been happening? what other software do you have installed (firewall, antivirus, parental blocking programs, ect.).

And give us another example of a file that you can not download.

I'm currently cleaning up a machine previously setup with CCM (a MS system management package for networked computers) that still does not allow downloading binary files. My current workaround is to download using "SAVE AS" AND rename the extension to .XXX or such AND set the type to "All files". I then rename the file to ".exe" and also have to "unblock" the file (from the file/properties window after right click) to run it. I suspect there is a MS safety setting somewhere but have not found it yet.

Well, as I said, I'm cleaning up a machine previously used on an enterprise network. It used to have McAfee on it, I uninstalled it... HOWEVER, McAfee lied and did not really uninstall, but it no longer showed up in the program list. I tried the consumer uninstall tool to see what happened:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

and it told me I still had an Enterprise version of McAfee on the system!!. I ended up at the manually uninstall corporate version page:

https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/inde...ent&id=kb50602

and balked at the extent of work needed. So I cheated a bit.
- I went to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and found a McAfee/Network Associates service and disabled it.
- I used several registry cleaner tools (Wise, Ccleaner, "Free Window Registry Repair") and JUDICIOUSLY deleted a lot of related keys that showed up as errors in one or the other.
- rebooted....

And.... I can now download exe files as I wish in both IE and Firefox.

YMMV and remember to back up the registry before mucking around with it. A system restore point is also a good idea. Good luck.
