Why is my computer so slow?

Hi. I have a really wonderful computer 3.6 ghz, 4 mb Ram, Intel Dual processor, Windows XP Sp3 - on paper. I don't think I have ever seen a system so slow. It takes forever to load up, forever for each individual program to run, this darn thing is even slow shutting down!
I have to be honest, I am a bit of a software hoarder, but I love all my programs!

Any suggestions?
Thanks so much

Check out this thread and see if it throws up any clues.

Also, how many programs/applications do you have open at any one time?

Hi guys,
I tried everything nut the paging change and nothing has helped so I've just changed that to 4092-4092. I usually only run 2-3 programs at one time but I don't know about background or services.
Oops, that was a goof - it's 4 gb - thanks.
Any other suggestions? I'm at wits end!

Thanks much.....

hit ctrl + alt + delete and run task manager. Then go to the processes tab. Click on the CPU column to sort by column do you see something running taking up constant processor %? Open up an application and watch the CPU to see if anything starts to use up excessive processor percentage (note if your a dual core processor 50% IS ALOT as the process could be using an entire core). Also how much HD space do you have and how much of it is still free? Have you check for viruses and spyware? Have you defraggmented your HD anytime recently? When did it start opening up programs slowly? Was this a low process or one day did it just start going slow?
