@buntyindia

I am suffering from the same problem. Not able to log in from safe mod too...

What happend is, when i run the norton antivirus, it is found that my comp is infected with trojen virus. and it said some of file used to run windows properly is replaced with an unrecognised version.Please inset windows pack 2 to repalce that back. Since i dont have the CD, i clicked "cancel" . Once the system scan is done by norton, it prompted to reboot the system. and After that i wasnt able to log in. It shows the log in screen ,once i enter user name and password it logs off...again prompting for the login screen.

Please someone help .

You will probably need to repair your windows XP via a windows disk. If you have the name of the virus/trojan (should be in the log of your anti-virus)you can sometimes find step by step instructions along with the window files that need to be replaced, but this isn't always the case. As for trying to log in now, when you first turn on your computer repeatedly press F8 until you see the windows advanced options menu. From that menu select start windows in safe mode. Now see if you are able to lob in without any problems. If your able to log in see if you can't find the name of the virus and post back here.

This is indeed a problem. It sounds like your win 32 files have been corrupted by the virus or issue that resulted with this problem.

I would first try to repair the OS with a Windows install disk. This can be done by inserting the Windows OS CD into the disk drive during start up. You might need to restart again at this point for the PC to start reading the CD at the proper point of the POST menu. When the restart initiates and the PC is booting up the PC should automatically recognize the disk in the drive. If it does it will prompt you to press any key to boot from disk. If it does not work you will have to press an F key (usually F8) to bring up the advanced booting menu.

From this menu select that you want to repair the existing windows configuration and follow the prompts. Once you have access to the OS search out the virus.

If this does not work the simple fix is to just reformat the hard drive. To do this follow the same directions as before, but instead of doing a repair follow the instructions on how to delete the existing partition (Windows) and install a fresh copy. When doing the format, do a full format so you ensure the virus is gone.
