Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound

144 100+
Hai friends.....

I am using Compaq Laptop..I used to hear songs most of the time...but suddenly when i open the Windows Media Player to hear the songs..it is not singing..but gives me the following error....

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

What can i do....pl give me idea...

Thanks in Advance...

Hi!
Have you checked, if the sound card driver is still installed? To do so, right click on "My Computer", choose "Settings", "Hardware", "Device Manager" and check the Multimedia & Audio devices.

Of course, you can go to the Compaq website, download the newest driver for your sound card (will be listed under the name of your laptop) and install that.

Yes, that would be an indication, that something is actually wrong with the driver, so we're on the right track. Have you tried reinstalling (or even updating) the driver?

Go to the HP Support Website (as HP took over Compaq) and choose your Laptop. Then follow the relatively intuitive layout of the site. It should be something like Driver - Multimedia you'll find the sound drivers under. Download it and then start the download.

If that doesn't work for some reason, go back to the "Device Manager", select that audio driver, right click it and choose "deinstall". That might solve the problem, as it might automatically reinstall the driver. If it doesn't, we can do that manually.

Hm, that's weird - none of those seem to be the sound card drivers. Have you deinstalled the audio driver as I suggested? If so, try doing a windows update - often missing drivers are found while doing that.

Oh by the way, you don't have any setup CDs that came with the Laptop by any chance?

Do you still see the yellow exclamation point in the device manager? If it is still there, then we will need to locate another driver manually. Could we get your laptop model number?

Ah, we're getting somewhere. The driver you need is probably this one. For any further drivers you may need, check this website.

Now, that gives you the driver, but obviously you had problems installing it before, so you may have the same problems with these drivers. So, just to clarify, you deinstalled the Audio Device in the "Device Manager" first, right? And then you tried to do an Update?

I'd suggest, you deinstall it again (if it isn't still deinstalled) and then try installing it with the driver I linked to. Maybe that will work.

Looks like you were not alone with this problem, I found this blog It sounds like that error is normal, but itsn't correct Here is how they stated to fix the issue (at least it worked for them).

10. Install the audio driver

Conexant CX20549-12 High Definition Audio Driver
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp36001-36500/sp36090.exe

When you install the driver it will give an error message [Media device not found]. Don’t get fooled by this
. Now it’s your turn to take control of the system.

Open your “Device Manager”. Look for “High Definition Audio Device”. You will find a yellow mark beside it indicating that the devices is not working properly. Right click and choose to install driver. Don’t let installation wizard do any thing on its own. Don’t let Windows to search for drivers. Choose advanced option of insalling driver by choosing the location on your own. Then choose “Audio, Video, Games Controller” and then don’t choose any driver from the list given by Windows. Click “Have disk”. Now you need to look for a “swsetup” folder in your “C:” drive. This is the drive where HP drivers have been extracted automatically. Look for “sp36090″ [the number of the HP driver] folder in it. If you don’t find the folder in “swsetup” look for the folder in “C:” drive. You will find one “.inf” file in the folder [Don't go into the other folders within 'sp36090' folder]. This is the driver file for your audio device. Select it and proceed irrespective of any warning by Windows. You will have your correct driver installed."

That is the first mention of a virus. What was the virus name and what did the virus do to your system? The driver file could have just got corrupted or messed up in some way (this isn't a rare occurrence). Now the support for the laptop and its driver files caused the problem in trying to reinstall the audio driver file. I'm glad you got it working!

Hello,

I searched google for this and found that this problem was caused (atleast in one of the cases) when system sound scheme was disabled. So try this and then check if problem persists.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Click Sounds and Audio Devices
3. Check Place volume icon in taskbar
4. Click Sounds Tab
5. Choose some saved sound scheme (other than 'no sounds') for the Sound Scheme.
6. Click “Apply”
7. Click “OK”

Then reinstall the audio drivers (if not already installed) as suggested by Studlyami and reboot. If problem persists, post back.

Hope this helps.......

Davidson was the Sound Scheme changed each time? Did you see the yellow exclamation mark everytime (aside from the last time)? If so, it sounds like your settings are being reset/restored for some reason. You said that you had a virus at some point? Do you know the name? Are you sure its gone? Have you run the anti spyware, anti-virus, and perhaps even a registry cleaner? Was this laptop a part of a domain?

Hello,

As Studlyami said, something is resetting your sound settings.
I expect that this laptop of yours was working fine for some months (or may be years) before this problem started. If so, then this is surely caused by something messing with your system settings. I cannot think of anything now (I dont think that repairing windows will be of any help) and so IMO you should try installing windows from scratch.

BTW, had you recently changed some setting related to sound when this problem started?
Post the screenshot of processes tab in Task manager (if there is some virus, we may try to identify it).

Also, before considering formatting, you should wait to see if Studylyami has something that may help you (He may have some good news in store for you).

Hope this helps.....

Hey sorry that I haven't gotten back I've been really busy recently. The quick fix is right click on the red X (or cross as you put it) in device manager and select enable this device. Then if any issues like discussed above arise just fix it as before and move on. Again I'm going to ask and please provide a response as it could help us. Did you recently get a Virus (last 6 months). If so, do you remember the name of the Virus?

When I did my initial research about your model it said that is was usually an OEM w/ no OS preinstalled. Are you able to reformat (and reinstall windows). Have you done this before? Do you have any sort of driver disks? The link I posted above had steps on how to set up your drivers for the model laptop from scratch, but doesn't go into details about it. Check back w/ some of that additional info and we can advise you on the next step and things to consider (there are things you should do before you reinstall or try anything to drastic). I do recommend running a virus scan from another source. I personally like this scan. It has picked up viruses that others have missed. It also identifies items that weren't viruses (password security type programs i had and wanted to keep) so be aware of what is listed.

Sorry for the delay in reply, I was away on holiday and didn't log in while I was away. If you look on the page i gave you there is a link which says "click here for free scan" Then on the next page click on the left box which says get house call free scan (or, try this link). The shop that you bought the PC from did they give you a windows cd? Did they give you a recovery cd?
