Com Port

When I try to use any of my com ports I get a message that the port is in use by another program or device. How can I tell what is locking up my serial ports?
Windows XP pro.

Thanks, dick

How are you trying to use the port, are you using a programming language and getting that error? Or, are you plugging a device in and getting that error?

If you're trying to program the port directly (sending values to its port addresses) then it won't work as it's already under the control of the OS.
