CPU Usage problem

164 100+
HI
I am using Windows XP SP2, and I own P4 processor.

My problem is TaskManager showing my CPU usage is at 100%.

No programs are running and checked the no of processes that uses high CPU usage, all seems running good. But CPU usage showing 100% always. what is the problem with it?

I have tried all the familiar antivirus programs but found nothing

somebody give me suggestions plz

thanx

There's a box in the lower left corner of the Task Manager that says "Show processes from all users. Please ensure that that box is checked and tell us if you now see a process with very high usage.

Thanks.

Also, for a more in-depth look into what's going on on your machine, check out Process Explorer from the Sysinternals Suite Download page.

Do you, by any chance run a Symantec/Norton anti-virus?
If so try to find a way to turn it off. Otherwise, I'd un-install it (but I'm prejudiced).

Try re-booting the system in safe mode and check
make a note all processes running in the task bar.
check for any unneccessay process running if found end process from task manager.
I am sure that there is some stupid process running that is taking up the cpu util.
does it comes from system startup or while trying to open a application.

HI

I have checked by safe mode. There too I found nothing. And one more thing I want to say that in processes 'System Idle Process' shows 90 and above %

And if I install any Antivirus software my system totally became down.

I have to wait for 10 minutes at start up.

Especially for symantec...

Thanx

Hmm every time i have seen this before it had been due to a download trojan, i suggest that you try disconnecting yourself from the internet and seeing if you still have the same problem.

Also if that is the case then run anti-spyware software rather than anti-virus as it has an increased chances of detecting a download-trojan you may find that if you do have one you will have ro remove it manually.

Hope this helps :/

I've run into a similar situation from time to time, and never did work out what was causing it. The really frustrating part is that the Task Manager lies to you. It shows (supposedly) all the running tasks, and how much CPU they're using. Then it says the total is WAY higher. How do they get the stupid total, then?

Ya fine.

But I have tried with Process Explorer too. That one also shows the same.
Does Process Explorer also lie?

Ya I haven't tried for anti-spyware. Have to make a try. Which anti-spyware is preferable?

If that problem is due to spyware why my system downs at startup? Moreover I have unchecked all the tasks from Msconfig.

Thanks.

I believe I've heard good reports about AdAware, though I can't say for sure how good it is. If in doubt, try more than one product. I don't think any of them catch everything.

Yes indeed, AdAware SE Personal is a good piece of anti-spyware as it happens this is normally what clears problems up for me. However from time to time with certain things it will be unable to remove them but it normally provides enough information on its location for you to be able to delete it. I would also recommend running Spybot - Search and Destroy as this will pick up other things that AdAware SE misses.

please open the hosts file that resides in the system32/drivers/etc folder and check for ipaddress to hostname mapping which is not at all set. delete all the unwanted entries if found.

Hi
Ya I opened that file and below is the entry found in that file.
127.0.0.1 localhost

I think there is no problem with this....
