Internet Connection on Windows Server 2003

cyberking
Hi all.

Hmm.. Firstly, I have never worked on the administration side and also know nothin bout it. So please forgive if my question sounds very dumb.
I am looking to you guys to please help me 'cos theres not one page on the internet that can tell me what I am seekin for.

Ok here's the scenario. I have a brilliant configuration on my machine. I have Win XP runnin healthy with a connection to the internet through a wireless gateway. Everythin's fine here.

I have about 3 more machines at home, which I thought of managing through a server. This is however not of concern now.

I loaded Win Server 2003 and hence have a dual operating system.
i.e., Win XP and Win Server 2003.

Now I just dunno what I should do to set up a broadband connection on the Server OS. Please help..
I tried gettin on to the command prompt in the Windows Server OS and then typed in "ipconfig" to see my IP, but I see that there is no IP address at all..

Please help me.. It has become quite a critical issue that I get the Windows Server OS hooked on to the internet cos its gettin me held up with my work..

I guess my expalnation here is quite ok to for somebody to help me.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks a Ton!!

Regards

Umm.. Hmmm..
I am sorry. But this wasnt of much help to me. Really sorry bout it and thanks for helpin me!

But the problem here is, the above Microsoft links tell us about ICS. Thats fine.
But then, moving to the basics, I aint able to configure a simple Broaband connection,.

Also, i have a D-Link Wireless gateway. And then my machine has a wireless USB PCI card from the same manufacturer D-Link. They are very fine on XP, but then why aint they behavin on the Server 2003. I installled the driver software for the PCI Card on widows server 2003, I also get a shortcut on my desktop. But then when I try to double click it and run it, it aint openin at all. I even go to the task manager to see what processes are runnin. I am atleast happy to find that the application (The Driver Software application that acts as a wireless monitor and controls various settings for the PCI device) is runnin somewhere in memory, but then why aint it showin up!!!

Next, this is what happens.

I go to
Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> New Connection

When I click on it, I get the network setup wizard. I then click on the 1st radio button which is "Connect to the internet".

Following it, I then select radio button three "Connect to a high speed connection that is always on" (Its almost like that! This is actually what I select even on WIN XP to configure a broadband internet connection). As soon as I select this, I get a window that says "You have already configured a Broadband connection. Please repair or try the online help!"

For gods sake, i dont understand where have I configured the Broadband connection already! I dont see an IP address too!

Somebody please help! This is drivin me mad! This is my third consecutive day of head breakin tryin to connect my machine to the INTERNET!

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks for all ur help

Kind Regards

hey guys, i wonder if you solved it already, but i i'll just try to catch up,
heres what i understand with your problem, you are using windows server 2003, and you cant use or connect to the internet, you are also using the same computer with dual OS, right?

1, login to the xp, go to Manage by right clicking My COmputer then go to device management-> look at your Modems and network adapters take note of the the model and manufacturer

2. notice that these(MODEMS and NEtwork Adapters) does not have an exclamation point(yellow) which indicates that these hardwares are running smoothly,

3. now logout then login to the server2k3, do the same in xp,

notice that video card, modems and network adapters are in Yellow Exclamation pt, this is because, you have not installed the DRIVERS of thse hardwares, what you should do is to download these drivers from the manufacturer, or, if you have a copy of that driver, well and good, if not try contacting the help and support of the manufacturers(if you're using an authentic copy)

problem 2.

you are connecting the computer physically with the cable,

what type of cable are you using?, you should be using a cross over cable(for diffrent devices such as hub-> switch-> pc)

is your Modem and net adapters are working properlyu?, it it is,

then what is your preferred DNS?

this is a very common problems we encounter, we are physically connected, but logically NOT,

so, try going to control panel ->network connections-> right click-> LAN-> properties-> IP(TCP/IP)-> properties-> preferred DNS?

it is better to use the static approach so that you will always know what is the ipaddress of the server,

now granting that you have chosen the static,

YOUR PREFERRED DNS should be the routers' ipaddress, because internet connection comes from it,

all other computers that needs the internet connection should use it as preferred DNS, or better, provide a new computer and delegate a role, a web server, from which all other computers will connect from, and that server is the only computer who will use the ipadd of the router

to sum it all up,

say you have 3 computers, 1 router

if you want the 1st computer to only connect to the internet- its preferrred dns should be the ipaddress of the router,

the other two will use the ip address of the 1st computer as there preferred dns.
