corrupt file

I am running XP home. I noticed that office 3 has been trying to upgrade thru automatic downloads and has failed numerous times. My pc is telling me I have a corrupt file C:\documents and settings\all users\application data, this has only shown up since the downloads started. I have uninstalled office and also done the Windows installer clean up tool. When I try to reload programs they all fail with a 1317 error message. It is getting very frustrating as I cannot re install Nortons, Office etc, can any one offer some advice please
