Control panel disappeared from start menu

Hello! I am new to this site and I need your help.

I am using Windows XP. My control panel is missing from the start menu. On its place "administrative tools" appears. Also, the task manager doesn't work when pressing ctrl+alt+del. A message saying "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator" comes up.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your early reply. I did't understand what I have to do. I don't know much of computers. I would appreciate it if you could give me a more detailed guidance. (eg. should I run "regedit.exe" etc?)

thanks

Hi! I did what you said. However, in "Advanced" instead of control panel another line called "Administrative Tools" exists.

Hello Ali
I tried the My Computer/Folder Options procedure and the problem was not fixed.

In the task manager there are the applications you mentioned (winlogon, svchost and system) following by SYSTEM and NETWORK. What does this mean?

Thanks

Actually i m researching on some of viruses in which runouce.exe and a newly born virus in which you can not display hidden files and folders. This is because of svchost virus and in such a file named sometime ravmon.exe and autoru.info is created in every drive and it cannot be deleted from disk. And it can not be scaned by any type of antivirus.
The thing you are saying that you have not see any controlpanel option in startmenu properties. This is not understandable to me.
Whatever...
I will send you a programe or some solution which will be done manually soon. be patient i have used some progrmes by the help you can show or hide the hidden files and folders.
But sorry i cannot help for showing controlpanel in startmenue if there is no option for controlpanel in startmenu properties.

I m sorry again
But i ll send you some helpful solutions for Hidden files and folders.

1) Do you know how to start your computer in safe mode? If so, please do so (safe mode without networking). Are you able to see these items in safe mode?

2) When your computer starts, do you see a welcome screen which asks you to choose a user account with which to logon to your computer? If so, on this screen press alt+ctrl+del twice - you should see a login screen. Type ADMINISTRATOR in capital letters and leave the password field blank. Press 'ok' or enter. Do you now see the control panel etc? If not, do you at least see the Run... menu? If so, go to it and, type taskmgr - Does it still say you are locked by the admin? You can also try typing cpanel in the run menu to see what result IT produces.

3) When you're using your computer have you noticed any advertisements which pop up at unusual or unexpected times? Have you noticed your computer acting odd or performing any malicious acts, your browser in particular? Have any annoying icons popped up in the system tray (bottom right hand corner by the time)?

4) If all of the above fails, You may also wish to download HiJack This! at the following location - Hijack This! - You may use this utility to generate a detailed report (log file) of the startup items on your computer, and post it here so that we may look at it to determine if anything malicious (virus/spyware) is starting when your computer starts up. To do this, use the top option "Do a system scan and save a logfile" - after scanning your PC it will open a text document (the log file) - post its contents here.

Sincerely,
Mark

hello,
Here is a solution by which you can show hidden files or hide them again

Type Regedit in Startmenu and press Enter

Now do this

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\
Advance

In Advance you will find a registery name Hidden

Open or Double Click on that Entery

A dialog will open here you will see a textbox labeled Value Data
Replace 2 to 1

1 is for Show Hidden Files
2 is for Hide Hidden Files

And i will help you a step more.
I will made a programe by which you can toggle hiddenfiles instantly just in a day.

Now i m searching any registery for Control panel

I'm working on a customer's machine at this very moment. Seems he likes to download free music. One of the buggy critters I've found on his machine is MediaPipe which is a P2P. It's either causing or has lead to an attack and hijack of this fellas machine. I'm going to pull the pin and rebuild the machine if I can't find a way to beat it. But be advised, something has GOT your computer, and removing access to the Control Panel / Task Manager is one of the traits of this infection. Good luck. I'll report back if I can beat this sucker without nukin' the mochine.

I had the same problem on one of my computers. A virus (rootkit, trojan horse, or something) takes control of the computer and disables or deletes the Control Panel & Task Manager functions by the Administrator. I had to replace my hard drive and install everything. The IR guy at work did it for me. He could not remove the virus with all kinds of software. I'm having the same problem with a different computer and am trying to use software to get rid of the problems but I don't know how to get the Control Panel back?
