VBS, WMI and printers

5
Greetings to all,
I have searched to, what seems, the ends of the internet for a way to accomplish this and have yet been able to find a way that works. So here is the problem. I work for an IT company that manages a good number of companies providing a wide verity of repair, networking and what ever else they might need. We are getting to the point where we need to be able to track and report these companies electronic assets. I have been able to write/modify/edit a vbs script that outputs an xls spreed sheet of the things we are interested in as far as the PCs. However, I can't find a way to get wmi to pick print servers. Note that this is a printer that has an ip address like a pc and not a printer that is shared over the network (that's easy). Please pardon the long introduction but it was necessary to explain my position to avoid 'say what?' replies. Thanks.

And yet, you got one...

It's probably time for a good read... Manning books have never let me down:

no. We want to know the ip address, make, model ect with out having to run around the entire office looking at each one. Oh, and if this helps most of the companies are on domains.

the problem I've run into is that most of the reading I've done has lead me to scanning/mapping/installing/removing printers that are connected to a machine. Like that book. I know of a few asset management software that gets the info of print servers but doesn't get the other info we need or lacks some other feature

at the risk of stating the obvious, you could try the free download of HP WebJet Admin, I know it doesn't provide an elegant, integrated scripting solution but, it will retrieve a lot of information about your printers and keeps in a SQL backend

oddly enough your post is the first I've heard of hp web jetadmin, despite my seemlingly endless search. I'll give it a try, but we really want/need something that doesn't have to be installed and can be run from say, a flash drive.

The hp program you recommend does scan and find printers with ip address like we want. However, it takes ~20 mins to install. So this is not a good option for us.
