Windows XP Pro loading problem

Hi guys here is the problem,

When I startup my DELL 600m laptop and get to the login screen and put in the password windows starts loading the profile and then hangs with the command prompt window in the background:
(c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe)

and the following error in the front window:
16 bit MS-DoS Subsystem
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encoutered an illegal instruction.
CS:0db7 IP:01b1 OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

If I choose to close it will close both windows and leave me with the blank desktop, If I choose to Ignore it will do the same.

I have tried using a different username, tried going into safe mode as admin, tried restoring by opening the windows restore through run command but all unsuccessful. Next I will try to replace the system 32 files that are failing by using a usb drive.

Any ideas on how to fix this or what may have caused this would be much appreciated.

kind regards,
Cyberdyne.

Could be c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe got corrupted or one of the WOW files in that directory. I can't imagine that anything 16 bit DOS is required on an out-of-the-box system, though. Do you have some ancient software installed on this machine?

Yep, userinit.exe was corrupted and I had to rebuild the registry for WMI components.

Safe mode did not work as I mentioned earlier.

the solution is here...

I had a problem with userinit.exe , I could find I simple way to solve it :

- userinit.exe was deleted my mistake ; then XP Pro SP2 couldn't Log in any user !

- I've copied from XP Home SP2 userinit.exe on USB stick

-I have booted from XP CD using Recovey Console (typing R)

-Copy userinit.exe to C:WINDOWS\System32\

My XP could start without problems.
