XP/Vista problems

I have just setup a home network ( 2 machines) , one withj XP and the other with Vista. The XP machine is connected to DSL thru a cable modem/hub.

I get internet connectivity on the XP machine , no problem. Vista machine can see the connection but can not connect to internet. It keeps telling (when I diagnose/repair , me to switch off the modem and restart. I have disabled the modem , still no luck.

Hi Blainey. Let's make sure we're getting our terminology correct, here, and get some helpful details like brand name and make of your modem.

• cable modem vs DSL: two different animals
• hub vs router: the latter can distribute DHCP leases

Hi.

Vista's connection thing is always kind of messed up on my setup. My PC is connected to the net via a network router, which has a bad habit of blocking port 80 , just for the fun of it...

When ever this happened I restarted the router, which obviously disconnected my PC from the net, but Vista apparently did not reconnect like XP always did.
So I clicked repair (or the red X between the router icon and the internet icon), waited for a while until it asked what to do next and, at which point I told it to re-generate my IP address. 99% of the time this would bring everything back online.
