Valid IP Address - No Internet

Hello everyone,

I am having a problem at home with my internet connaction. I am on a cable connection with a static ip address. My fiance recently downloaded the JS/Psyme virus and I removed it later that day. Since the virus was detected I have not been able to access the internet. I backed up all that I needed and re-installed windows xp. While doign that I formatted the hard drive. When XP was done installing I installed my anti-virus and hooked up the internet again. When the internet still didn't work I shut down my computer and power cycled the modem. When I started the computer I checked to see if I had a valid IP address and I do. I contacted my ISP and they say everything looks good from their side. I tried a winsock fix as well and that didn't work. I tried to release and renew my ip address using ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew. Nothing seems to be working. I have the updated drivers for my network card and they installed just fine. They are the same drivers I used before I got the virus. Is there some way that the virus infected my master boot record and is somehow blocking my networking? I don't know. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it that would be great!

lets try alittle test, do u have a second computer?
if so, the network cable u have running to the computer that can't connect remove it, use that cable to connect another computer to the internet.

If the second computer and connect to the internet then it might be a software/hardware issue.

if it doesn't connect to the internet the network cable could be damaged, so it will need to be replaced.

post back wil the results and if need be, we'll see what can be done.
good luck

Thanks for the suggestion..
I do have a second computer at home. I am at work at the moment but I will try it out when I get home and let you know how it goes.
**Note: I recently upgraded the speed of my internet connection from my isp. Is there a possibility that my network card can not handle the upgrade?
Also, do you have any suggestions on a better anti-virus program than AVG? I have been looking at Spysweeper with AnitVirus and using ZoneAlarm for a firewall.

Your network card should still be able to handle it, what is your new speed? and as for anti-virus software i use Norton Internet Security 2007; i've been using norton for many years and it seems to be doing the job.

The new speed is 10 Mbps download speed and 1 Mbps upload speed. This is up from 5Mbps download speed.

I think a 10/100 network card would still work fine with that.

So you have 2 computers at home, one gets on the internet fine, and the other doesnt? on the computer that doesnt work, go to Start>Run>and type "CMD" > then when the command prompt is open, type "ipconfig" if you look at the results it says something like DNS Suffix, IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Whats the First octect, 192.xxx.xxx.xxx?

then try, with the command window still open, "tracert google.com" how many hops does it take?

My ISP messed up the install of the internet. The problem was a lousy female - female coax connector. Thanks to eveyone who gave me the suggestions. I tried them out and when nothing worked I called my interenet provider and sat on hold for half an hour to be told they had to send someone out on Sunday morning to fix it. Thanks Again!
