Mounting a drive to folder

What is mounting and its use? How to mount a drive to the drive in win XP?

Weird term, isn't it?... Disk drives that are connected at the time of boot-up, are mounted by the OS. Removable media is usually mounted automatically when you plug it in. Instead of that term, however, Microsoft gives users things to do like "Map network drive" and "Reconnect at startup"; same thing, different words (wouldn't want users going around "mounting" drives, now, would we?)
