Hi.
I have a Sony VAIO desktop with Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D drive with 5.1.2535.0 driver.
I can play DVDs and CDs and write to regular blank CDs, but cannot get it to recognize either blank DVDs or blank CD-RW disks.
Note that my other Sony VAIO laptop has same problem.
They are both running WinXP.

Hi bob6831 welcome to TSDN,
go to sony's website and look to see if they have any new drivers.
Another thing is, just cuz u can read DVDs doesn't mean u write them. I know some Sony, HP, DELL computers give u DVD drivers are only burn to CD (forces u to pay more to upgrade).
Well, after no success with Sony support via email (what a frustrating experience!), chatted with Sony rep online.
We did update my firmware on the appropriate drive, and then drive did recognize (to some degree) the blank DVD, but did not write to it.
A 2nd chat with different Sony support rep online informed me that Sony Vaio and WinXP does not have any native support to write to DVDs, need 3rd party software, (which I successfully installed and used), AND that would only work with 16X or less CD-RW disks. Disk I was trying to get to work was a 24X.
So, think I have my questions answered.

Thanks, Bob. Any chance of getting a link to that 3rd party software, for those in need of this info in the future?
What I successfully used is DeepBurner Pro. It does burn files to DVD, but I rushed the test and deleted the first files I burned when I did a 2nd session......... so I don't believe it is easy to operate/understand for dummies like me............. but here is the link: http://www.deepburner.com/
