Be prepared for trouble. The following items will be lost:

1. The file names for all files in the root directory of the drive.
Files will have to be identified by their size and/or content, and
renamed.

2. The folder names for all of the folders in the root directory. The
contents, including subfolders, will all be okay and that information
should allow you to determine the correct name for at least most of
the folders.

Additionally, any badly fragmented files will be difficult if not
impossible to recover because the file allocation table entries will
have been zeroed out.

If you installed the OS after the format then you probably will not be able
to recover anything because it has been overwritten.

Another tool to salvage the data from formatted hard drive is Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software. It has served well for me recovering the data which I lost due to software malfunction. Stellar Phoenix provides recovery from following cases: from formatted hard drive, data lost occur due to software malfunction, viruses, file/directory deletion, viruses or even sabotage.

Hi ankan,

I had faced the same situation as yours. I thought I lost all my data. One of my friend told me that reformatting a drive does not does not erase the data on the disk, but only the address table. Relieved then, he suggested me Disk Doctors NTFS Data Recovery Software for my Windows XP installed drive. I got all my data, Hope it will again proves its worth for you as well.

I hope this is an alright spot to post my question

I've been visiting a few websites & reviewing the data recovery software they offer. I've checked out ZAR, WhiteCanyon, Magic Jelly Bean & MediaRecover so far. Unfortunately, I've gotten myself into a situation where my HD is damaged & I'm not sure if recovery of my valuables is possible. This is a very imperative recovery, so please, help me out.
Thanks. Sam.
