1 core total cpu usage no explanation

hello i have a windows vista pc with a dual core pentium 1.8ghz processor and 2 GB of ram
some times randomly when i'm working the cpu usage will change to 50% all on one core (so one core is at 100% and the other is at about 2%) this will cause the computer to freeze up. task manager has no explanation for the high cpu usage (still showing that total cpu usage should be about 2/3% as a sum of all the processes but showinmg that it is actualy at 50) when it dose this system idle processes are still at about 97%. also if you try to uninstall somthing it will start working perfectly normaly again for about 5 mins then crash again. is thins a virus, software or hard ware thing? (i built the pc myself but it has been running for about 3 weeks befor this started happening)

I believe that any process that is not multi-processor aware will run only on one core. If that process is in a tight loop, it make your usage show 50% (I've seen this often on our dual-core machine).

In Task Manager, there is a "Show processes from all users" check box in the lower left-hand corner. Is it checked?

You may also want to check out Sysinternals Process Utilities. I particularly like Process Explorer.

do u have mcafee anti-virus installed on that system? if u do uninstall it. My work computer has windows vista with roughly the same specs as u, and then we noticed that mcafee was eating all the resources, once we removed it we haven't had that problem since.

good luck
