Direct connection of WinXP with Vista

Hello everyone. This is my first post.
I want to connect a laptop pc, with windows vista home premium, with a desktop pc, with windows xp professional SP2.
I want to connect them with utp cable and make ethernet network. Is it possible? I tried to give the same name of workgroup, but that didn't work.
Any suggestion is helpfull.
thanks for your time

Searching for doc, I realized that I'm glad that I don't have Vista.

Having a router would make your life much simpler. All the setting that you need to get right would be done automatically. Routers are cheap and add a ton of security.

Otherwise, you'll need to assign IP addresses to each and refer to each computer by IP until you get DNS to work. Addresses in the range 198.162.1.xxx are common and safe to use.

You'd have to use a crossover cable (or a crossover cable adapter). You could make one if you have a CAT-5 crimping tool and an RJ45 connector.

Basically, with a crossover cable, you connect one computer directly to the other one. IIRC, you will need to manually assign them an IP address. With both computers on the same workgroup, they should easily see each other.
